How to use the Forum

This should act as a general guide for those of you that are not very familiar with the layout of our forum, as well as others similar to it.

So far it is broken down into these sections

Getting Started

When you first enter the forum, you should see a page similar to this one:

This is the default page that any guest will see. Guests are limited as to what they can see.

Once you have created your account and signed on, you will see a page more like this (we'll use Mad Eye Winkleman as our example):

Once you are signed on, you will see all of the boards that are available to you. Boards are sorted into categories, as you can see above. The visible categories on this example would be "Brethren of the Great Lakes - Town Square" and "Ships of the Brethren Fleet". Boards are the message areas within a category, such as the "Event Listing" and "The Docks" for example.

Getting on your ship!

For those of you that are part of the crew of a ship, you should see your ship listed under the "Ships of the Brethren". If you do not, contact an administrator and they will get you added to your ship. You see, there are many ships boards here, but they are private boards and therefore not visible to you; you need to be assigned to it in order to see and use it. If you think that your ship is not a part of the Brethren, contact your captain or an administrator.

If your ship is listed, then click on it to enter your ship's board. Mad Eye Winkleman's ship is the Marie Griffon.

Once on your ship's board, it should look something like this:

Here you can see the separate topics that are inside the ship's board. Each ship's board is visible only to the captain and crew of that board. Each captain should have their own ship's articles, roster, etc. posted to the board. There will be an example ship for everyone to see coming soon.

One important thing that you should do is to activate your "notify" tab:

Marie Griffon crew note: You are required to do this! Click on the "Notify" tab to turn on your notify option. This is a particularly handy tool for your captain to post messages to the ship's board and be sure that you will get the message, for this will automatically send you a notification to the email address you used in your profile. Failure to do this will cause you to miss out on potentially important messages! This option is also available on any board within the forum also!

Posting and Replying to Messages

Once you're on, you will find many messages to read! Stuff from your crewmates, other brethren stuff in general, and the topics are endless! Community stories, historical information, all of the brethren events past and future, where to find photo galleries, drink recepies, guidelines for your character; it's endless!

Once you have found a message you want to contribute to it's easy to get going. Below you see a message from Mad Eye Winkleman about haunting the ship, and a response to that message about keeping it off the sails (that's another story!). Mad Eye posted a new message by creating a New Topic (in the above image you can see the "New Topic" tab right next to the "Notify" tab). Once you read the message, you will have the option to respond to it in two different ways. You can click "Reply" on the white tabs area as Captain Black Roger did, or...

...if you want to quote it you can click on the "Quote" button in the message header (see below). If you are the author of the finished message, you will also see the options to "Modify" or "Remove" your message.

If you do want to quote the message (sometimes a good idea), then you should click on "Quote". Once you have clicked either "Reply" or "Quote" you will see your message writing screen:

Here you find all sorts of options! Pirate smileys, font styles, colors, sizes, highlighting, alignment, and more! And you can put in hyperlinks and images too! (More on that later.) The example above shows a quoted message, and for some of you it gets confusing. Let's break it down below:

As you can see, the quoted area has coded items and stuff that can look confusing, but don't alter any of that. Go to the blank area below the [/quote] box and start your message there. I like to skip a line when I do that. You can click "Preview" at the bottom to see what it will look like (the preview will appear above the message writing area). You can revise it all you want, and then when you are done, click on "Post" at the bottom. Don't forget the spell checker if you want! (Aye, but tha' infernal spellin' checker be wreekin' havoc wit' me writin'!)

Your finished message will look something like this:

Good so far? Okay then, let's try posting some pictures!
