This year the festival is running from August 3-8 in Grand Haven's Central Park, next to the Loutit District Library in Grand Haven Michigan; who is sponsoring many pirate events during the week, including guest speakers, guest authors, pirate seminars, story time, and so on! People will enjoy the history, music and adventure of pirates, presented for the whole family! Our special vendors will be bring the event to it's climax on Saturday, August 8 for one day only! Led by the Pirate Lords of the Great Lakes themselves, this promises to be a Grand Time!

In addition to the other events going on throughout the week, the brethren be presenting a discussion series on various issues involving pirates. The 4 part series will be held Monday through Thursday at 4:00 pm in the Library itself. Each discussion will concentrate on actual history and be about a half an hour with question and answers afterwards.

Of course thar be plenty o' buccaneer fun as th' brethren will be on hand all week as Grand Haven joins in the piratical fun. Mark your calendars, get your gear together, an' prepare t' learn a bit o' history at the 3rd annual Michigan Pirate Festival!

Monday August 3

Highlights: Guest Speaker - Capitola of the Brethren of the Great Lakes will be hosting a discussion about "Navigation during the Age of Sail". Learn how Captains guided their ships before such things as GPS were invented. Jackie Sparrow will read stories to the little ones, providing her own special brand of piratical fun. And watch and learn as cannons are fired to kick off the Buccaneer Fest with a boom!

Discussion Series Pt. 1 - "Pirate Ships"
Presented by Count d'Booty, this discussion centers on the vessels used by pirates during the Golden Age of Piracy. It includes military classifications, types, and what pirates did to "convert" a captured boat into a pirate cruiser.

Tuesday August 4

Highlights: Guest Speaker - James Spurr, Author of "Sworn for Mackinaw", "One Sloop & Slow Match", and a brand new book in the "Great Lakes, Great Guns" series and President of the Shipwreck Maritime Museum. Mr. Spurr will be giving a presentation on his book series and maritime history in the Great Lakes region up to the War of 1812. Jackie Sparrow will once again read stories to the little ones, providing her own special brand of piratical fun.

Discussion Series Pt. 2 - "Pirates in Literature"
Presented by Commodore Black Roger, this discussion provides an inside look at the book that started it all, "A General History of the Robberies and Murders of the Most Notorious Pyrates". Written during the Golden Age of Piracy, you'll learn it's history and how it's affected our view of pirates today.

Wednesday August 5

Highlights: How good a pirate would ye be? Find out by joining in on "Pirates of the Spanish Main", an easy and fun pirate game that will be demonstrated by Arena Games. The Dark Flower Gypsies will be performing entertaining dances for those desiring more musical fun.

Discussion Series Pt. 3 - "Modern Pirates"
Presented by Admiral Morgan Ramirez, Part 3 of the series offers a look at modern pirates and how they compare to their historical counterparts. The discussion includes an overview of current events in the Caribbean and Somalia.

Thursday August 6

Highlights: Meet the Brethren as they are on hand to discuss pirates, buccaneers, maritime issues, the Great Lakes, and other things you always wondered about pirates. Jackie Sparrow takes on the little ones in fun and entertaining, child friendly, sword fights and play time.

Discussion Series Pt. 4 - "Buccaneers"
Count d'Booty discusses what made buccaneers different from other pirates in history, how they came about, and how they ruled the Caribbean for nearly 200 years. The discussion includes who the Brethren of the Coast were and how they came to be.

Friday August 7

Highlights: Once again the pirates will be repeating last fall's invasion by sailing into Grand Haven aboard their boats, debarking at the waterfront for a public "meet and greet". Grand Haven's famous "Musical Fountain" will be running a special "pirate" themed program to welcome the pirates and to celebrate Buccaneer Fest. Buccaneer Bash - After the Brethren invade, they'll be celebrating and socializing at a special party where everyone is invited to meet and interact with them.

Saturday August 8

Highlights: The brethren be setting up their market and offering their wares to all who be looking for a bit of booty. Central Park will be filled with merchants displaying goods from all over! Stage Shows - the Dark Flower Gypsies and the Bawdy Boys will be performing on stage providing fun entertainment for the entire family. Captain Tiger Lily and the crew of the "Crimson Reign" will be performing fun, entertaining, combat shows/demos.
